“Education - explained Bertrand Russell - should inculcate the idea that humanity is one family with common interests and that consequently collaboration is more important than competition.” This statement applies to all professional and life spheres and certainly fits perfectly for the trade fair sector. In Warsaw, at the beginning of October, was held EXPO4FUTURE, an important conference dedicated to the exhibition industry, where the presidents of the trade associations and other strategic figures of the sector took part. In light of my experience as CEFA president, Central European Fairs Alliance, I was asked to reflect on the role of associations. Stimulated by this question, once again, I was able to focus on the precious usefulness of the associations, understood as realities that promote activities of participation, solidarity and pluralism, for the achievement of goals in some way linked to social utility. Membership to the associative activity involved an experience of active participation in political life with the concrete merit of a socio-economic level. In particular, CEFA was born over 60 years ago for the development of the economic and social development of a European area that still had the divisions created by the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. Today it collects and connects trade fairs in the Balkans area, in the Alps and in Central Europe and over the years has created, with great profit, a network of communications and know-how transfer to improve the quality of services and overall results. The objective is to be a think tank available to territories and companies, to better intercept all the potential and be a bridge between countries. An amplification, in short, of what the individual fairs do and a model that reflects the local one at a supranational level. Today, fortunately, we have a very active World Association present on all areas of the world. With great professionalism, UFI pursues important objectives, promoting our sector, developing awareness of the enormous importance of trade fairs, increasing the professionalism of its members and developing synergies between them. We trade fair operators have an enormous responsibility: we build bridges and break down walls, we develop well-being and social growth, trying to do it with solidarity and responsibility.
